Advanced Critique Encouraged

Just testing out my retouching skills.  The first two images are separate shots direct from my digital camera, cropped.  The third image was produced in PhotoShop to combine the best smiles from each shot and remove distracting elements.  Foreground and background were separately balanced and the background was sligtly blurred.  Clothing fuzz and dark eye lines retouched.

Critique encouraged!  I never received formal training in photography or image editing so I'm kind of just ad-libbing everything, but I'd like to learn.

DA account doing well

This month has been good for my DA account which up until recently has had little attention.  With the posting of some photos I wasn't doing anything else with, I've attracted a new total of 26 favourites.  I also felt inspired by one of the photos I saw on someone else's profile and graffiti'd it onto my FaceBook wall.  I posted my doodle of it on DA and the original photographer faved that as well!

FaceBook's Graffiti application is difficult to draw with, because it only has one brush type and an undo button.  You get brush size, colour, and opacity, and that's it.  Even the colour chooser is limited--if you want a colour not in the palette you have to type its hex value.  The cool thing is you can watch a replay to see how the artist built up the image from strokes of colour.

unidentified snake species

Would anyone be able to comment with suggestion of what species this might be?  I tried scouring the Internet in hopes of identifying it but I gave up when I couldn't find any snake with that particular black and yellow diamond pattern.  I took this photo in Niagara Falls but don't believe this species is native to Ontario.

Interestingly enough I called 911 recently.  The odd thing was I felt no real concern or panic.  I was surprised, and my first thought was to call 911 but after that, I instinctively knew nobody was inside and I felt completely calm about the whole thing.  Then I pulled out my camera and took pictures of the minor disaster. (If you click the link there are two other pictures that turned out decently.)  The owner of the house showed up a few minutes later, coming out of the bar down the street.  He seemed only mildly upset, and left while the fire department began to arrive.  Anyway, I was more excited to be the first on the scene so I thought this was rather interesting.

House Fire Closeup House Fire Closeup

Snap, crackle, pop -- literally. The house across the street burst into flames as I came home after my Friday night shift at work. This picture was taken about two minutes after I placed the 911 call to report the fire, which I spotted at about 1:20 AM on Saturday morning.

Self-portrait with orange hair

New hair! I've received two compliments on it already. My friend Cathy did it for me, and she did an awesome job. It blends into the roots so it doesn't look too cheap, and when my hair grows in, it will still look decent.
